What makes the extended version and movie version similar is the fact that Mulan obviously wants to be herself.

When Mulan is wounded after fighting with the Huns in the snow on the mountain, she is lying in a tent and Shang hears news that she is actually a woman! As Shang goes into the tent we see Mulan lying there with feminine facial features again.This excerpt makes my point much Щ…ШІЫЊШЇ clear.

As a warrior MulanвЂ™s lips are more of a natural color not a rosy as when she is being вЂњfeminineвЂќ.

As a warrior Mulan doesnвЂ™t have top eyeliner (thicker black line on top of her eye extending past where her eye meets her skin) which made it seem like she had eyelashes as well.

The very apparent on is that when Mulan is having to act more masculine as Ping, they give her more a chiseled jaw that her rounded face at times when she is being more вЂњfeminineвЂќ.

But because the audience knows that Mulan is actually a woman and in scenes towards the end of that song we see her excelling in the training activities she was once struggling with, being вЂњa manвЂќ, and even doing it better than her comrades, actual men. The song is saying that to be successful and win this war вЂњBE A MANвЂќ! That contradicts the notion that Mulan is fighting for which is you donвЂ™t have to be a man to be successful, you can be a woman.

This song is also a difficult one to put into the category of helping the viewpoint get across or because of the lyrics, not helping the viewpoint. Especially when she sings, вЂњWhen will my reflection show, who I am inside,вЂќ as she wipes away her makeup from the earlier appointment with the match maker. We see Mulan sad here, feeling like she is letting her family down with lyrics like, вЂњI will never pass as the perfect bride, or a perfect daughter.вЂќ The audience sees that even Mulan is struggling with the fact that she knows she is not fitting in with her societyвЂ™s standards or norms. The second song that is in the movie is вЂњReflectionвЂќ.But we can also look at this and see that it is setting up the story and what Mulan will soon defy. This song has lyrics like, вЂњBring honor in one wayвЂќ, вЂњThe men by bearing arms, a girl by bearing sons.вЂќ The lyrics here are obviously not helping the idea that women are equal to men when itвЂ™s stating that the womanвЂ™s job is to bear sons and be in the home. This is when Mulan is getting ready to be presented to the Match Maker to help Mulan become a bride. The first song that is sung by the characters is вЂњHonor to Us AllвЂќ.The lyrics of these songs really hold the direction of the story, so I think to some degree the audience should pay attention to what the songs are saying. Some of the songs throughout the film.Some rhetorical tools that I noticed the creators used that didnвЂ™t go along with what the overall message of the movies are: She even made a man lose his job because she is such an incredible warrior and person. Lastly, the whole recognition that Mulan receives in the end from the emperor shows that she, a woman, did do something incredible for that time.

You said you trust Ping, why is Mulan any different?вЂќ Second, when Mulan tries to tell Shang that the Huns are close and the city is in danger, he doesnвЂ™t believe her because she is Mulan, a girl. This helps the viewer be able to relate to the character better.

We see thatВ she is slightly clumsy, and is late to things. I also like the rest of this scene because we see that Mulan is not a perfect girl. I love how the creators of the text put these two pieces together just because itвЂ™s obviously foreshadowing what will happen in the end of the movie. The first noticeable rhetorical tool that I foundВ in the beginning of the film was when the emperor said, вЂњOne man may be the difference from victory and defeatвЂќ, and then it fades to Mulan in her bed hastily eating rice and preparing for her day. There wasnвЂ™t as many BIG rhetorical tools that I found in Mulan that coincided or helped the actual storyline of the film. They would just be watching the film and realizing the certain commentary that we media scholars or feminists could find offensive. They wouldnвЂ™t be seeing the film through a media scholars eyes or a feminist. To avoid this particular finding that the creators in fact didnвЂ™t put a lot of emphasis on the message we all loved dearly growing up, like MeredithAncret said, is to remember that this movie was targeted to a specific audience that wouldnвЂ™t be analyzing eachВ scene or song. Because of this, the movie seems to be ironic in a few places throughout the film. As previously stated, I found out that even though there is certain message that is being portrayed through the movie Mulan, it doesnвЂ™t always seem that way once you start to tear it apart and analyze the film.
